Hollywood, St. Pete: Take 1

By: Bill De Young, Creative Loafing

On the very first day of his very first shift as director of the Sunscreen Film Festival, Ryan Tarrant surveyed the growing crowd on the steps of the Palladium Theater and marveled the day had finally, finally come.

“Going up to midnight last night, I still had questions: Did this get covered? Did that get covered?” the cheery, seemingly inexhaustible Australia-born executive said. “But today, as setup got started and things falling into place, there was a weird kind of creepy calm. I think a lot of people in a position like this would be freaking out, but luckily I have a super-awesome team. We’ve delegated these things out and we can reply on them.”

The first official day of summer may be weeks away, but things are already heating up at Ringling College for film students, filmmakers, and movie lovers everywhere.

Just last week, I had the pleasure of discussing the recent inauguration of Ringling Studios, our new state-of-the-art facility that allows students to work with a wide range of top filmmakers on their film projects, in a guest column for the Herald-Tribune. Well, believe it or not, a lot has happened in that one short week.

The Guest of Honor at This Spaceballs 30th Anniversary Party Is Princess Vespa

By: Richard Horgan, ADWEEK

One of the fun things about an event like Friday’s tribute to Mel Brooks’ 1987 Star Wars spoof Spaceballs at the 12th Annual Sunscreen Film Festival in the Tampa Bay area is that it gives reporters the perfect excuse to revisit such an artifact. Tampa Bay Times film critic Steve Persall hopped on the phone with actress Daphne Zuniga, who played Princess Vespa in the send-up. Zuniga will introduce the free outdoor screening at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and also take part in a post-screening, indoor Q&A, open to festival pass-holders only.
